Did you know? Haxey has played a giant pub-based scrum for about 650 years

Did you know? Every 6 January, Haxey plays one of the oldest games in England. It's called the Haxey Hood.
A giant scrum, called the "sway", pushes a leather tube, the "hood", to one of four pubs. The winning pub keeps it until next year. Rugby, but the try line is a bar.
The legend says that in the 14th century, Lady de Mowbray's silk riding hood blew away. Thirteen farm workers chased it across a field. She was so amused she gave 13 acres of land, as long as the chase was re-enacted every year.
Records suggest a deed around 1359, making it about 650 years old. Possibly the oldest surviving tradition in England. If the 6th falls on a Sunday, it's held on the Saturday.
