Did you know? The Plowright Theatre is named after a Hollywood dame from Brigg

Did you know? The Plowright Theatre on Laneham Street is named after one of the most decorated actresses Britain has produced. Dame Joan Plowright was born in Brigg and educated in Scunthorpe.
She went on to win a Tony Award, an Olivier Award and two Golden Globes, and was made a Dame in 2004. She married Laurence Olivier. Not bad for a Brigg girl.
The theatre was built in 1958 and was originally called Scunthorpe Civic Theatre. It was renamed in the 1990s in her honour. It has 354 seats and a traditional proscenium stage.
Its very first show, in 1958, was Peer Gynt, staged by the Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club. That club was founded by her father, Bill Plowright. She later served as its president.
