Did you know? England's greatest cricketer played centre-half for the Iron

Did you know? Ian Botham, England cricket legend and one of the greatest all-rounders ever, played football for Scunthorpe United. Not a charity match.

Proper league football. The club signed him in 1980, and he played until 1984. He played centre-half and made eleven appearances in the Football League.

Imagine being a Fourth Division striker and finding a Test match hero marking you. He was also a regular for the reserves, and once scored a hat-trick against Blackpool at the Old Show Ground. Apparently he could do more than hit sixes.

Botham went on to become president of Scunthorpe United, from 2017 to 2023. So next time someone says Scunthorpe's never had any stars, mention Botham. Then mention Keegan.
