Did you know? Before he was a two-time European Footballer of the Year, Kevin Keegan was ours. He signed his first professional contract at Scunthorpe United, under manager Ron Ashman.

Back then the club couldn't afford a set of football nets. They trained on a rugby pitch at Quibell Park, and played five-a-side on the Old Show Ground car park. Concrete.

Character building. Young players took turns driving the minibus to away games. Then there's the tractor.

Keegan and four teammates borrowed a coach's stopwatch to time rallies round the Old Show Ground on the club's vintage tractor. On Keegan's turn, it crashed. The axle went through the engine.

They were harshly reprimanded. He made his debut in 1968, aged 17, and scored 18 goals in 124 games. In the summer he worked plate-laying at the Appleby Frodingham steelworks.

SRN Verdict

Liverpool signed him in 1971. The rest is history. The tractor is not.
