Council discovers 50-year-old pool is, in fact, 50 years old

Big news from Riddings Hub on Enderby Road. After draining the pool, the council found that a pool built in the 1970s has 1970s plumbing. Who could have predicted it.

The plan was a £1.2m refurbishment, with improvements to the pool and changing rooms. Then surveys found "significant deterioration" in the mechanical and electrical systems. The work needed turned out to be "far more extensive than first anticipated". As things in old buildings so often are.

So the pool stays shut. Instead, the council says it will develop plans for a brand-new pool for Brumby and nearby communities, including Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe and Messingham.

Council leader Rob Waltham said: "The answer isn't to keep patching up a 50-year-old pool – the answer is to build a new one." Hard to argue with that.

The good news: the gym, library, studio and community spaces reopen on Monday 2 November now the roof safety work is finished. The pool has been closed since 17 July and the whole centre since 30 August.

SRN Verdict

What we don't know yet: when the new pool will open, where exactly it will go, or what it will cost. Until then, Riddings' swimmers are on dry land.
