Brace yourselves, Winterton. Four of your streets are about to be smooth.

North Lincolnshire Council is resurfacing King Street, Park Street, Hart Lane and Mill House Lane. Work is due to finish by Friday 6 November. Crews will lay new surfaces, replace kerbs where needed, adjust drains and drain covers, and repaint the road markings.

The council says it has already improved roads in 30 towns and villages and filled more than 18,000 potholes. 18,000. That's not a road network, that's a colander.

Council leader Rob Waltham said: "Whether it's a pothole outside someone's home or a street that needs a new surface, people want to see the work getting done."

Ward councillor Elaine Marper warned there will be "some disruption while the crews are working". She added that more Winterton roads that "need sorting" are "coming soon". The two most dangerous words in local government, after "consultation".

Drivers, expect closures until 6 November. After that, enjoy the strange new feeling of not bracing for impact.

SRN Verdict

Note: the council first said work would start on 12 October; a later version of its announcement said 19 October.
